Louis M. "Sam" Bass, 83, completed his final rotation around the sun on 29 October 2017. Louis was born in a cotton field in Prentiss, Mississippi and raised in Citronelle, Alabama. After graduation from Citronelle High School, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and proudly served for 25 years, in the U.S. and abroad. As a military disbursing officer, he rose to the rank of Major while addressing the financial needs of military personnel. He enjoyed volunteering within his community, playing golf, travelling, and supporting his favorite football teams. A decade of playing for various USMC football teams left Louis with a lifelong passion for the game. Roll Tide. Louis and Mary were faithful and active members of Golden Springs Baptist Church, where he served in many volunteer roles, including Deacon and Sunday school teacher. Louis loved God, family, friends, and country. "Once a Marine, always a Marine. Semper Fi." He served his country and his God with pride and honor and we, his children, are proud to call him Dad. Our lives are the better for experiencing his smile, his infectious sense of humor, his wise counsel, and his warm embrace. Louis is survived by his wife Mary Jo Barker Bass, the love of his life for more than 62 years; three children: Teresa Foster (Rick), Louis A. Bass (Debbie), and Pamela McPherson (Rick); eight grandchildren: Nicholas Foster (Elisa), Andrew Foster (Jessica), Christopher Donovan, Nicholas McPherson, Lindsey McPherson, Jordan Bass (Ashley), Corey Bass (Hazuki) and Lauren Bass; and three great-grandchildren, Maddie Stoller, Anna Foster, and Claire Bass; and a sister, Frances Maher. He was preceded in death by his loving parents Henry G. Bass and Edna C. Bass; brother Glaston Bass and sister Alease Fagan; and granddaughter Tegan Foster. A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, November 3, 2017 at Golden Springs Baptist Church with Pastor Roland Brown officiating. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service. A burial ceremony with full military honors will follow at Forest Lawn Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that any donations be made to the Golden Springs Baptist Church or the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society. Miller Funeral Home and Crematory Phone: 256-831-4611
