Marilyn Elizabeth (Humphrey) Quarles, 89, of Springville passed away February 6, 2018 at UAB Hospital from complications of a stroke. She is preceded in death by her parents, Virginia C. Brothers and Arnold Frank Humphrey, of Attalla; brother, Arnold F. Humphrey Jr., of Miami, Fla., and husband, L.D. Quarles of Springville (September 30, 1924-May 10,1982). She is survived by sisters, Norma Smith, and Ernestine Hodges Oden; son, Leigh Darryl Quarles, M.D. and wife Anne; three grandchildren, Leigh Walker Quarles and husband, Eric Farmer, Jackson Humphrey Quarles and wife, Anna, and Scott Deason Quarles and wife, Whitney, and three great-grandchildren, Jamison Hall Quarles, Emma Leigh Quarles, and August Eric Farmer. Marilyn was born on December 31,1928, in Etowah County. She graduated from Etowah High School in the Class of 1946 and enrolled in Montevallo College. She married L.D. Quarles in September of 1946, and they started two successful businesses, the Spring Theatre and legendary Dairy Dip restaurant. Marilyn returned to college in the early 1960's, attending Snead Junior College and Jacksonville State University, before graduating from the University of Alabama at Birmingham with a Masters in Education. She taught in the Saint Clair County School system for over 30 years, including at Margaret, Steele, Odenville, and Springville. She was the 5th woman elected to the Alabama State Legislature in 1974. She married Charles L. Bromberg IV in 1986, but later divorced. She owned and operated the Twin Cinema in Pell City for many years. She lived in Springville for over 70 years and most recently at Saint Martin's in the Pines in Birmingham. She was an independent spirit to the end. After a private burial in the Springville Cemetery, a memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on February 24, 2018 in the Cemetery Chapel located at 875 Robinson St, Springville, Al.
