The funeral service for Martha Lanora Horne, 97, will be held on Monday, March 20, 2017, at 11 a.m. at Benefield Funeral Home in Ashland with Bro. Gerald Hoyle, Bro. Chuck Johnston, and Bro. Rodney Johnston officiating. Burial will follow in the Millerville Community Cemetery. Mrs. Horne passed away on Thursday, March 16, 2017, in the Clay County Nursing Home. She was born on August 14, 1919 in Millerville and attended Bibb Graves High School where she played basketball. Mrs. Horne went on to drive a school bus, then worked at Brecon during World War II, sold cosmetics and worked at the nursing home. However, her main occupation was her family for whom she cooked, sewed, gardened, preserved food and whom she admonished and encouraged. Mrs. Horne was a skilled hunter and she made beautiful quilts. She joined Hatchet Creek Baptist Church in 1938 and for more than 40 years served as the church clerk. Mrs. Horne was a pillar of her community. She is survived by one daughter, Janet Horne Smith, of Prattville; one son, Cary Matt Horn (Pam), of Coleta Valley; one daughter-in-law, Evon Horne, of Talladega; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. Mrs. Horne was preceded in death by her parents, Jesse Varner Carr and Daisy Myrtle Miller Carr; her husband of 47 years, Amos Matt Horne; one son, Bobby Gene Horne, and one grandson, Bobby Wayne Smith. Family members and friends will serve as pallbearers.
