Staff Sergeant Major (SGM) Mary C. Costello, U.S. Army (Retired), 85, passed away on 24 March 2017. Service will be held on Thursday, 20 April 2017 at the WAC Chapel, Fort McClellan, AL at 2 p.m. followed immediately by burial with military honors at the Anniston Memorial Gardens on US 431. A reception celebrating Mary's life will follow at the American Legion, 1501 Pelham Road, Jacksonville, AL 36265. SGM Costello is preceded by her parents, Martin and Bridget Costello and her brothers, Morgan, Martin and John Costello. She is survived by legions of friends from her time in the military and her many retirement activities. SGM Costello joined the U.S. Army in New York, N.Y. and began her military career at Ft. Lee, Va. for basic training. Her career assignments included Ft. Knox, Ky., Ft. Jay, N.Y., Yokohama, Japan, Ft. Monmouth, N.J., Vint Hills Farms Station, Va., Ft. McClellan, and Colorado Springs, Colo. SGM Costello returned to Ft. McClellan where, after serving as Sergeant Major of the Army Reception Station, she retired after 23 years of service on 31 August 1974. Her awards included the Army Commendation Medal (with clusters), and the Meritorious Service Medal (oak leaf cluster). While on active duty and during her retirement, Mary, also known as "COS", was active in getting the WAC Museum built at Ft. McClellan and the new museum known as the Army Women's Museum built at Ft. Lee, Va. She was also very supportive of the Center for Concern in Anniston, Meals on Wheels, of Jacksonville (MOW), the League for Animal Welfare (LAW), the American Legion and the Disabled American Veteran Association (DAV).
