Mary Gertrude Smith Stewart (Trudy) died on October 8, 2015 at the age of 94. She was the daughter of the late Arthur Henderson and Anne Ogletree Smith and predeceased by a brother, Arthur Henderson Smith Jr. Trudy was a graduate of Anniston High School and held a Bachelor of Science Degree from Jacksonville State Teachers' College (now Jacksonville State University {JSU}). She also was awarded a Master's Degree in Library Science from the University of Alabama. After the Great Depression and World War II, she and her late husband, John R. Stewart, served as educators in a number of south Alabama communities. In 1964, they returned to JSU where Dr. Stewart served as Director of the International House and Trudy was appointed Assistant Professor of Instructional Media. Her class was required for every degree JSU granted so she knew literally thousands of JSU students. In addition, she assisted her husband by serving as the unofficial "First Lady" of the International House Program and was a dear friend to the hundreds of foreign students in that program. They retired from the University in 1985. When Dr. Stewart died in 2000, Trudy moved from Jacksonville to Fayetteville, Ga. to be near her children. Trudy is survived by a daughter, Anne Stewart Cruz (Juan Antonio) and two sons, Randall Warren Stewart (Willa Curry) and John R. Stewart Jr. (Cheryl Smith). In addition there are six grandchildren, Lani April Stewart, John Stewart Cruz (Kimberlee Harris), Randall Benjamin Stewart (Shannon Stephens), Mariah Stewart Christy (Kyle), Megan Rebecca Stewart (Scott Lien) and Laura Stewart Jordan (Bryan); six great-grandchildren, Kayla Mariah and William Cage Bundy, Steven Antonio and Dylan Harris Cruz and Tyler Benjamin and Emma Elaine Stewart. Private graveside service will be held at a later date. www.southcare.us
