MSG Robert L. Kitchens, 81, US Army (Ret.), died peacefully at his home on Thursday, May 1, 2014, after an extended illness. In celebration of his life the family will receive friends at K.L. Brown Funeral Home, in Jacksonville, Tuesday, May 6, 2014, from 4-6 p.m. The family wishes to share the rendering of full military honors at the conclusion of the visitation for all who are able to attend. Mr. Kitchens is survived by his wife of 54 years, Joyce Batson Kitchens, of Piedmont; his daughters, Beverly Ann (Larry) Palmer, of Stockbridge, Ga. and Brooke Ganell (Chris) Brock, of Birmingham; a son, Robert Ward Kitchens, USMC (Ret.), of Piedmont; 11 grandchildren, James R. Gilley, Mandy G. Arnett, Blaire L. Barbarbari, Austin H. Arnett, Taylor L. Arnett, Ward L. Kitchens, Caitlin E. Kitchens, Sydney N. Kitchens, Ethan J. Watson, Madaleine A. Cross, Emery J. Goray, Nolan L. Brock and Ashlynn G. Brock. Mr. Kitchens retired from the US Army as MSG after almost 25 years. After retirement from the Army, MSG Kitchens owned and operated his own business in excess of 20 years as Country Road Refinisher, where he enjoyed many professional and community relationships. During his almost 25 years of active duty with the US Army, he served in diverse duties in post WWII, Europe, Korea, Vietnam, Alaska, Ft. Jackson, SC and several returning assignments with the US Army Chemical Center and School at Ft. McClellan. Mr. Kitchens was a member of the Alexandria F&AM Lodge #208. Mr. Kitchens was dearly loved by his immediate family, his parents-in-law, Ward W. and Myrtle A. Batson; his brother-in-law, Gary W. Batson and his wife, Betsy; his beloved brother-in-law, Howard Dowd; and a beloved cousin, Fred Clay and his wife, Jeanette. Mr. Kitchens was preceded in death by his daughter, Kaye E. Kitchens; one infant son, Robert L. Kitchens Jr.; his parents, George B. Kitchens and Evelyn I. Kitchens Prescott; one sister, Evelyn K. Dowd; and two infant siblings.
