Service for Paul J. Canter Sr., 88, will be Wednesday, February 8, 2017 at 2 p.m. at Thompson Funeral Home with the Rev. Jack Morgan and the Rev. Jerry Pike officiating. Honorary ministers will be the Rev. Bobby Kirk and the Rev. Michael Ingram. Burial with military honors will follow at Piedmont Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends Wednesday from noon until time for service. Mr. Canter passed away Sunday at Redmond Regional Medical Center in Rome, Ga. Survivors include his son, Paul J. Canter Jr., of Gainesville, Ga.; two sisters, Peggy Johnson (J.B.), of Madison and Gail Johnson, of Centre; one brother, Thomas Canter, of Piedmont, and numerous nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Danny Mac Pointer, Shane Pointer, Phillip Pope, Steven Smith, Johnny Jordan, Raymond Kirk, and Glenn Buttram. Mr. Canter was a native and resident of Piedmont most of his life and was a U.S. Army veteran. He retired from Ford Motor Company with 33 years of service, where he only took two weeks vacation during his entire career. He was a loving husband to his wife of 55 years, Lillian and a wonderful father to his son, Paul Jr. He became a devoted caregiver to his wife until her passing in 2015. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian Canter; parents, John William and Sarah Rebecca Wilson Canter, and seven brothers and sisters.
