A funeral service for Peggy M. Brown, 86, formerly of Jacksonville will be held Wednesday, August 19, 2015, at 11 a.m. at West Side Baptist Church with the Rev. Truman Norred and the Rev. Kenneth Phillips officiating. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home this evening from 6-8 and at the church one hour prior to service on Wednesday. Mrs. Brown died on Friday, August 14, 2015, in Bluffton, S.C. Mrs. Brown was born in Booneville, Mississippi on December 18, 1928, and lived her early years in Piedmont, Alabama. She graduated from Piedmont High School in 1948. She married Elmer Douglas Brown from White Plains in 1948, and most of her adult life was lived in Jacksonville. She had worked some years at J.C. Penney, in Anniston, and retired from working at the Alabama State Employment Office, in Anniston. During this time, she also earned a degree from Jacksonville State University in Library Science and English. She was an active member of West Side Baptist Church, where she taught bible study, participated in WMU and sang in the choir. After retirement, she volunteered at JCOC as well as at Kitty Stone Elementary School. She loved reading, gardening, her pet cat Punkin and camping. She had moved to Beaufort, South Carolina in 2010 to be near her daughter, due to increasing health issues and was also a member of Port Royal Baptist Church there. Mrs. Brown is preceded in death by her husband, Elmer D. Brown, of Pleasant Valley; her parents, W.R. and Ethel McCullough and her brother, W.R. McCullough Jr., of Piedmont. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Larry Heaton, of S.C.; a brother, C.D. McCullough, of Tenn.; three grandsons, Ben Heaton of N.C. (USN) and Mark and Luke Heaton, of S.C.; five great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Roberta McCullough, of Piedmont, and several nieces and nephews.
