Funeral service for Mr. Perry DeWitt Welch, 82, will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 26, 2015, at Barfield Baptist Church with the Rev. John Howell, Bobby Welch and the Rev. Emmett Pettus Roper officiating. Burial will follow in the adjoining cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church on Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. until service time. Mr. Welch passed away on Sunday, August 23, 2015, at the Clay County Hospital. He was born in the Webster's Chapel community to Dove and Ola Roper Welch. Perry graduated from Alexandria High School and proudly served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He worked for the Alabama Power Company as an appliance repairman and control center operator, retiring after 32 years of service. As a skilled electrician, it was often said of Perry that if he couldn't fix something, then it couldn't be fixed. He was also an avid Auburn fan who enjoyed attending Auburn Football games for many years. Mr. Welch was a member of Barfield Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Donna Cummings Welch; two daughters, Susan Park (Jim), of Sarasota, Fla., and Kathy O'Shaughnessy (Don), of Alabaster; one sister, Emma Ree Battles, of Webster's Chapel; two brothers: Bobby Welch, of Gadsden, and Elmer Welch, of Oakman; many nieces and nephews; cousins; his uncle, Rev. Emmett Pettus Roper and his aunt, Ina Phillips. Mr. Welch was preceded in death by his parents, Dove Bedford Welch and Ola Roper Welch. Pallbearers will be Dennis Welch, Bobby Dale Welch, Stephen Holland, Mike Brewer, Mike Spratlin and Gary Bradford. Employees and retirees of the Eastern Division of the Alabama Power Company will serve as honorary pallbearers.
