Rachael Elmyra Morrison, 90, passed away at her home, in Oxford on Monday, January 2, 2017. She was born in Birmingham on October 3, 1926 to Myra and Phillip Burbage. Elmyra was a member of the 1944 graduating class at Philips High School in Birmingham and soon married David Morrison on July 10, 1946. In 1953, David and Elmyra moved with their 3 children to Oxford. They became active members of Oxford United Methodist Church. Elmyra served her church in many capacities. She was president of the Wesleyan Service Christian Society (WSCS), member of the United Methodist Women and a Sunday school teacher. Throughout her life she worked as a columnist for the Anniston Star, writing a society column called "Oxford News". She was also a co-owner of both Quality Carpets of Oxford and Oxford Interstate Chevron. Elmyra also had a passion for service and volunteering. Her civic duty led her to working the polls for local, state and national elections for over 30 years. She was President of the American Legion Auxiliary and worked with the Boy Scouts of America. Her greatest achievement was her love and devotion to her family as a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great grandmother. Elmyra Morrison is survived by her daughters, Myra M. Hand (Harris), and Mary B. Elliott; nine grandchildren, Donna Field (Charlie), Gena baker (Kirk), David Morrison III (Shannon), Phillip Morrison, Rachael H. Waldhour (Jamie), Leslie S. Hand, Bradley L. Elliott (Heather), Kevin N. Hand, and Shelby E. Ray (Michael), 16 great-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, David Morrison Sr., her son, David Morrison Jr. and daughter-in-law, Gail Morrison; her son-in-law, Lynn Elliott and great-grandson, Kyran Simmons. Service will be on Thursday, January 5, 2017, 11 a.m. at Oxford United Methodist Church. Visitation will be prior to the service at the church from 10-11 a.m. Burial will follow in the Forestlawn Gardens Mausoleum.
