The Funeral Mass for Mr. Richard Douglas Sawyer, 82, will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 28, 2016, at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Golden Springs with the Reverend Robert J. Sullivan and the Reverend Bryan K. Lowe officiating. Burial will follow at Forestlawn Gardens. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Mr. Sawyer passed away on March 24, 2016 at NHC. Mr. Sawyer was a native of Michigan and lived in Lexington, Ky. for a number of years. He attended and graduated from St. Bernard School in Cullman and had lived in Calhoun County since 1950. He was also a part owner and salesman at East Alabama Auto Parts. Mr. Sawyer was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, where he served in many capacities including being a member of the Parish Council and the Finance Committee. He supported the basketball program of Sacred Heart School and enjoyed attending as many games as he could. He loved his Faith, his family, NASCAR and his fishing. He taught his family how to pray, how to live and how to die with dignity and humor. He truly loved life and was a hard worker, a trait he passed along to his family. He is preceded in death by a son, Mark Douglas Sawyer; a brother, Tom Sawyer and a sister, Jane Balmut. Mr. Sawyer is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 61 years, Joan Sexton Sawyer; three daughters, Debbie Hand, Lisa Koors (John) and Leslie Halliday (Greg); a daughter-in-law, Tawanna Sawyer Kaufman; two sons, Peter Sawyer (Kimberly) and Mac Sawyer (Jennifer); seventeen grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Charlie Maniscalco, Richard East, Jake Smith, Bob Sullivan, John Koors and Cliff Brooks. Honorary pallbearers will be Steve Hughes, Dr. Mike Wiedmer, Jim Collins and John Holliday. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic School or to the Mark Douglas Sawyer Memorial Scholarship Fund, 5 Morton Road, Anniston, AL 36207. The family would like to thank his numerous doctors and the caregivers and staffs of Alacare, RMC, Autumn Cove Assisted Living and NHC Healthcare for the wonderful care given to Mr. Sawyer.
