Funeral service will be Thursday, June 15, 2017, at 2:30 p.m., at Collier-Butler chapel for Mr. Robert Davis Coley, 85, who passed away Friday, June 9, 2017. The Rev. John Simmons will officiate. Interment will be at Lincoln City Cemetery Lincoln. Robert Davis Coley was born to Malcolm E. and Willie Bell Coley on February 4, 1932. The 6th of 10 children, he graduated from Lincoln High School and obtained a teaching degree from Jacksonville State University in 1955. After playing football at JSU, he began his coaching and teaching career. He coached at Altoona, Glencoe and Hokes Bluff. In 1963 he had the first undefeated season for Hokes Bluff as head coach. In 1968 he entered management at Gadsden's Republic Steel and worked there for 28 years. In 1972, he was elected to the Etowah County Board of Education where he served for 28 years. Mr. Coley enjoyed JSU football, traveling, and vegetable gardening. In addition, he maintained a Christmas Tree Farm for over 20 years. He dedicated his life to sharing with friends and neighbors who had a need and to the education and success of his children and grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his daughter, Sheree Coley Mann; parents, Malcolm and Willie Bell Davis Coley; brothers, Lamar Coley, Malcolm Coley, Alan Coley, Jerry Coley, Gary Coley; and sister, Frances Purdy. Survivors include his daughters, Lezlie Coley Stauffer and her husband, Jeff Stauffer, Stephanie Sawyer and her husband, Joe Sawyer; sisters, Pat Powell, Sara Hughes, Martha Trejo; grandchildren, Daniel Parker, Jeb Stauffer, Griffin Stauffer, Lindsey Mann Chesser (J.P.), Michael Mann (Stephanie), Lydia Mann Zapata (Josh), Seth Mann, Elizabeth Mann, James Mann, Joseph Sawyer (Briana), Carly Sawyer; great-grandchild, Jacob Sawyer, and over 100 nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Seth Mann, Michael Mann, Daniel Parker, Joseph Sawyer, and James Mann. Honorary pallbearers will be Seaborn Black, Stanley Coley, and Wayne Knight. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made in Mr. Coley's name to the (www.cancer.org), or (stjude.org).
