Mr. Robert L. Ponder, 82, of Oxford, passed away March 17, 2010. Graveside service will be Friday, March 19, 2010, at noon at Forestlawn Gardens. The Rev. Terry Bostic will officiate. His family will receive friends Friday from 10:30 -11:30 at Miller Funeral Home. A native of Alabama, Mr. Ponder served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and was a 50 year member of Masonic Lodge 101 in Oxford. He retired from Anniston Army Depot with 38 years of service and was secretary and treasure of AFGE Union Local 1945 for 18 years. Mr. Ponder is preceded in death by his grandson, James Robert (Rob) Lindley; parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Lee Ponder, along with five brothers and two sisters. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Helen Cooper Ponder; daughter, Sheila Ponder Lindley and husband, Don; granddaughter, Tracy Jill Lindley Thompson and husband, Darren; great-granddaughters, Lindley Brooke Thompson and Kana Nicole Thompson; great-grandson, Nicolas Cade Thompson; sister, Ann Milam and several nieces, nephews and special friends. Pallbearers will be Greg Clark, Shawn Clark, Terry Ponder, Mike Burford, Clark Ponder, Gene Ponder, Billy Birchfield and Tony Freeman. Honorary pallbearers will be Buddy Ponder, Kenneth Lockridge, Chris Warren, Ray Lockridge and Darren Thompson. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
