Funeral service for CSM Robert L. Yates (Ret.), 78, will be today, December 9, 2016, at 6 p.m. at the Anniston Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with full military honors. The Rev. Buddy Nelson will be officiating. Cremation will follow the service. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 4 until service time. CSM Yates died on Wednesday, December 7, 2016, at UAB Hospital. Survivors include his wife, Ellen Yates; two sons, Michael (Betty) Yates and Dennis (Deanna) Yates; one sister, Anne Brown; one brother, Tommy Metz; eight grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. CSM Yates spent a combined 32 years in the U.S. Navy and U.S. Army, retiring at the rank of Command Sergeant Major. He served four tours in Vietnam, earning two Distinguished Service Cross Medals, Silver and Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart during his enlistment. After his military retirement, CSM Yates earned his nursing degree and was an RN dedicated to patient care at Anniston Regional Medical Center, and most recently with Comfort Keepers. His life was a testament of service to his country, his family and his patients. He was dedicated to them all and loved them deeply. CSM Yates was preceded in death by two sons, Chris Yates and Steve Yates; one brother, Eddie Yates; and one sister, Kathy Samodell. CSM Yates was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing as often as possible. He attended First Baptist Church at McClellan. In lieu of flowers the family has asked that donations be made to a charity benefiting service members and veterans.
