A memorial service for Mr. Rodney Dale Petty, 69, was at 11 a.m. on Monday, December 12, 2016, in the Acker Chapel, at Anniston First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dale Clem officiating. A private burial will take place at a later date in Rex, Ga. Mr. Petty passed away on December 9, 2016 in Anniston. He was veteran of the US Army and honorably served his country during his enlistment. Mr. Petty received his master's degree in education from Georgia State University. He taught at M.P. Word Elementary school in Fairburn, Ga., Charles Raleigh Elementary School in Palmetto, Ga., and finished his teaching career at Marietta High School in Marietta, Ga. Mr. Petty was a true environmentalist and enjoyed sharing his love of the environment with his students. He would spend many hours outside the classroom with them teaching them through civil projects, hikes, and bike rides. He truly cared about their education and wanted them to become in tune with their environment. Mr. Petty was a true renaissance man. His many interests included cooking, woodworking, taking classes at John C. Campbell in North Carolina in blacksmithing, and became an avid horseman. He took great pride in each of his projects. Mr. Petty dreamed of living off the grid and surviving off the land. He visited Alaska many times and spent several months as a park host through the State of Alaska. He was an adventurer and traveled throughout the world. Mr. Petty is survived by his wife, Ellen Comfort, of Anniston; a son, David Sabino, of Atlanta, and a brother, Richard Petty, of Atlanta. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the League for Animal Welfare, 2726 Bynum Leatherwood Road, Anniston, AL 36201.
