Funeral service for Mrs. Ruth Cotney, 101, of Oxford, will be held 1pm Thursday, December 21, 2017 at Gray Brown-Service Mortuary with Rev. Chad Clifton officiating. The family will receive friends from 12-1pm at the funeral home. Mrs. Cotney passed away in Montgomery on Monday. Mrs. Cotney is survived by her two children, Joe Cotney (Gail) of Pike Road, AL Julia Bowles (Ed) of Pensacola, FL; grandchildren Mike Marshall (Wendi), Kelly Tidd (Ron), Bryan Cotney, Stephen Strickland (Heather), Amy Brown (Josh), Laura Thomas (Mike), Jennifer Routson (Jason), and Carrie Streets (Casey); 15 great-grandchildren; and 6 great-great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband Elkin King Cotney; daughter Miriam Cotney Marshall (Bill); parents Thomas and Sarah Newsome; cousin Janet Newsome; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins. Pallbearers will be Bryan Cotney, Mike Marshall, Ron Tidd, Mike Thomas, Jason Routson, Casey Streets, Chris Allen, and Stephen Strickland. Mrs. Cotney was a graduate of Anniston High School. She worked for Southern Bell Telephone Company for eight years. She was a home maker, a wife, and a mother of three children while also being active in scouts, the PTA, and her church of 87 years Ruhama Baptist Church. She was also a teacher with the Headstart program since its inception in 1966. She retired at age 70. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother and will be greatly missed.
