Funeral service for Samuel Joseph Phillips Sr., was held on Saturday, January 6, 2018 at 2:15 p.m. at the Mt. Calvary Baptist Church with Pastor Titus Robertson, officiating. Interment followed in Highland Cemetery. Mr. Phillips passed away on December 31, 2017. Anniston Funeral Service is entrusted with final cares. Sam was born June 19, 1940 in Anniston the third child of Joseph Franklin Phillips and Mahola Combs Phillips. He attended Anniston City Schools, Cameron State University, The University of Oklahoma and Jacksonville State University. Sam served several years in the United States Army. He was baptized and united with the Mount Calvary Baptist Church as a young boy and remained until his death. He worked for several area employers including Monsanta Chemical Company for twelve years. He retired from the Anniston Army Depot Fire Department and was the Public Relations Officer at Anniston EMS until his death. Sam served on several area boards: The Anniston Water Works, The Sports Hall of Fame, The Department of Human Resources, The Chambers of Commerce, The Boys and Girls Club. In 2009 he was the first recipient of the EMS Systems Advocate Award. He won many trophies playing golf. He loved jazz and has a great collection. He also love photography. He was the person at every event taking pictures of everyone. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters, Marie and Mary Frank and his son, Antonio. Loving him and missing him forever is his devoted and loving wife of 40 1/2 years, Yvonne; his children, Sam Jr. and his wife, Cassandra, of Columbus Ga; Adrian; Stephanie, and his baby, Adina; his sister, Gwendolyn McClellan, of Birmingham; his grandchildren, Damaris, his heart, Trey; grandchildren like, Malik, Mekhi, Rylee Bug and Katie; his sister-in-law: Lola and her husband, Larry; brother-in-law, Fred and his wife, Anna; nieces and nephews, Dekoslyn; La'shon and her husband, Solomon; Valarie; Devonya and her husband, Marcus; Tara and her husband, Dijon; Biancia; Fred III and his wife, Shelly; Marcus and his wife, Katie; and Larry Diar; his first cousin, Barbara and his sister-like, friend Beatrice.
