Verna Muriel (Vice) O'Hara, 93, passed away on April 10, 2015 at her home. She was the daughter of Homer Lee and Tessie Iola (Hall) Vice of Alabama. Verna has resided in Circleville, Ohio since 1945. She was a 1940 graduate of Alexandria High School in Calhoun County, Alabama. She attended Anniston Business School in Alabama and was a graduate of the American Technical Society of Chicago, Illinois. She spent her childhood near Crystal Springs, Alabama. She worked at Fort McClellan Army Base in Anniston, Alabama during World War II. There, she met Charles E. (Chuck) O'Hara when he served in the U.S. Army near the end of the war. They married at the Piney Woods Chapel on Fort McClellan and moved to Mr. O'Hara's home in the State of Ohio and settled in Circleville. Verna began her career in local government as Deputy County Auditor of Pickaway County. She was appointed to the Pickaway County Auditor's seat by the commissioners, to finish the term of the elected auditor, who was unable to finish due to ill-health. She was then elected to a term as Pickaway County Auditor in 1956. She was the first woman to hold this elected position. She finished her career at the Ohio State Taxation Office and retired in 1976. She was actively involved with many civic and community affairs. After retirement, Mrs. O'Hara stayed involved in local city politics. Verna always enjoyed her visits with family. She held family and friends close to her heart. She loved her many nieces and nephews along with her beloved friends and neighbors. Her hobbies included her love of travel and her many varied art projects. Verna was preceded in death by her husband, Charles E. O'Hara; four sisters, Katie Beggs (Tombs), Mary Vice, Ruby Parish (Henry) and Ellen Watford; six brothers, John Vice (Aileen), Herman Vice (Laura), Thomas Vice (Ellie Mae), Floyd Vice (Lavada) and Pelham Vice. Family will receive friends from 11-1p.m. with a funeral service beginning at 1 p.m. today, April 14, 2015 at Defenbaugh-Wise Schoedinger Funeral Home, 151 E. Main St., Circleville, Ohio. Burial will follow at Forest Cemetery.
