Service for Victor Mart Bates, 57, will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Thompson Funeral Home with the Rev. Michael Ingram and the Rev. Eric Arrington officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 - 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Mr. Bates passed away Thursday, March 12, 2015, at RMC Jacksonville. Survivors include his wife, Lisa Steward Bates, of Piedmont; four children, Shannon Bates (Michele), of Piedmont, Anthony Bates, of Anniston and Amanda Woodward and Candice Woodward, both of Ohatchee; two step-children, Heather Ingram, of Piedmont and Brandy Kiker (Craig), of Jacksonville; five grandchildren, Alexis and Brayden Bates, Dylan and Ethan Kirk and Anna Kiker; a sister-in-law, Diane Bates, of Spring Garden and nephews, Steve Bates, Tracy Bates, and Heath Bates, all of Piedmont. Pallbearers will be Brian Pike, Jamie Young, Marty Lively, Craig Kiker, Keith Word and Jeff Byers. Mr. Bates was a resident of Piedmont most of his life and was a graduate of Piedmont High School. He attended Gadsden State Community College. He was a member and past President of the Piedmont Jaycees. He retired from Winn Dixie and was the owner and operator of Bates Grub Mart in Oxford from 2001-2012. He was a very devoted Alabama Football fan. He will be very much missed by his family.
