Funeral service for William Herbert Barker, 96, of Anniston will be 2 p.m. today, March 18, 2014, at Gray Brown-Service with the Rev. Peter Hawker and A.D. Shaw officiating. The family will receive friends today from 12:30 until service time at the funeral home. Mr. Barker was born August 30, 1917, and passed away on March 15, 2014, at RMC. Survivors include his daughter, Barbara Varnum; sons, Ronald Barker (Allyson), Harold Barker and Rodney Barker (Linda); grandchildren, Max Barker, Scooter Barker, Pat Snow, Will Snow, Anna Johnson, Will Barker and Melissa Barker; four great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Ethel Barker. Mr. Barker is preceded in death by his first wife, Fannie Kate Gray Barker and his second wife, Mamie Pruett Barker; parents, W.H. & Inez Barker; brothers, Tip Barker and L.V. Barker. Mr. Barker was a building contractor. He formed a partnership with Farley Berman and the company was Barker-Berman Construction Co. He built many homes and buildings around the area. He developed Lenlock shopping center and Ski Lodge Apts. He was also a partner in the Industrial Plating Co. in Tenn. Mr. Barker was a member of McCoy United Methodist Church. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He was a Mason and Shriner. During his spare time and after he retired his hobby was woodworking. He also loved to fish and square dance. The family would like to express their appreciation for the loving care provided by his caregivers, Donna Curvin, Shirley Forbus, NHC Place and Alacare Hospice.
