Anniston - A celebration of life for William Howard (Smitty) Smith, 81, will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Anniston Memorial Funeral Home with the Rev. Ronald Hardy officiating. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends this evening from 6 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Mr. Smith passed away on January 7, 2014 at his residence with his wife and family by his side. He is survived by his wife, Pearline, with whom he celebrated 61 1/2 wonderful years of marriage. Other survivors include sons, David (Vangie) Smith and Daniel (Tammie) Smith; four grandchildren, Jessica, Scott, Kyle and Clay; three great-grandchildren, Jacob, Hallie and Landon; two brothers, Charles and Harold; four sisters, Dorothy, Margie, Judy and Joyce; and close family friend, Janice Gunter. Family members and friends will serve as pallbearers. Mr. Smith was a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather to his family. He was loved by his family and friends. He was a dedicated Christian who loved the Lord and served Him faithfully. Mr. Smith was a life-long resident of Calhoun County. He graduated from Oxford High School, attended Jacksonville State University and served in the United States Army in the 1950s. He worked with his sons and other children as a volunteer coach when the Anniston Boy's Club was established. He retired from Lee Brass Company as a Patternmaker with more than 40 years of service. He was an active member of the First Wesleyan Church where he served in various capacities.
