A memorial service for Sergeant Major William Joseph McBride will be held at the K.L. Brown Funeral Home Chapel, Saturday, October 8, 2016, at 4 p.m. with the Rev. Dennis Wood officiating. A visitation will take place at 2:30 p.m. prior to the service. Interment will take place at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery. Sgt. Maj. McBride died Saturday, October 1, 2016. He is survived by his wife, Anne McBride; his daughter, Melinda (Michael) Mearns; his son, Douglas (Shelly) Elliott; his brother, Robert (Mary Ellen) McBride; several nieces and nephews; his cousin, Judith Mayes Ohmit, and his brothers-in-law, John (Barbie) Knight and Richard (Pam) Knight. Sgt. Maj. McBride was born in Terre Haute, Indiana, in 1937, and graduated from Ashboro High School in 1955. He entered the U.S. Army in 1956 and served tours of duty in Germany, Vietnam, Italy and various posts in the United States. After 32 years of service, he retired in 1987. Included in his awards, were the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Bronze Star and the Army Commendation Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters. He was an avid bird watcher and enjoyed photography and traveling with his family and friends. Sgt. Maj. McBride was preceded in death by his mother, Juanita McBride Truttier; his father, Ernest Burton McBride; his brother, James McBride, and his daughter, Caryn Alison McBride.
