A Celebration of Life service for Mr. William "Bill" Norris, 61, will be at 1 p.m. on Sunday, June 11, 2017, at the First Baptist Church of Jacksonville. Dr. Derek Staples and the Reverend Fred Taylor will officiate. The family will receive friends on Saturday evening from 5 - 7 at the church. Mr. Norris passed away on June 6, 2017 at his home. Mr. Norris attended Jacksonville State University, where he studied Criminal Justice and was a resident advisor for the International House where he forged many lifelong friendships with students from across the globe. Upon graduating, he began a law enforcement career with the Jacksonville Police Department, where he protected and served the community for nearly 30 years. At the beginning of his tenure, Mr. Norris also served as a volunteer fighter. During his continued years of service, Sgt. Norris volunteered as the department's first D.A.R.E. officer, teaching drug resistance education and was the first school resource officer at Kitty Stone Elementary School. Norris graduated with honors earning a master's degree in public administration while working full time and raising four children. After a brief retirement, Norris went back to work with community corrections for the Calhoun County Sheriff's Department. Mr. Norris continued to give back to his community while not on duty, coaching several Parks and Recreation baseball and basketball teams for young athletes, volunteering with Habitat for Humanity, and teaching criminal justice courses at JSU as an adjunct professor. Mr. Norris was a member and deacon at First Baptist Church of Jacksonville where he also taught youth Sunday school and participated in several mission trips. He was a member of the local and state Fraternal Order of Police. Mr. Norris is preceded in death by his mother, Catherine Hancock Norris, and his father, MSgt H.J. Norris, USAF, (ret). He is survived by his wife, Pam Norris; a daughter, Sarah Kate Norris; his sons, Matthew (Amanda) Norris, Stephen Norris and Michael Norris; a granddaughter, Waverly May; a brother, Pete (Cheryl) Norris; several nieces and nephews. Honorary pallbearers will be Deacons of First Baptist Church of Jacksonville, the Calhoun County Sheriff's Department, and the International House at Jacksonville State University.
