Funeral service for Mr. Zenus "Pa Gig" Pettus, 93, will be Saturday, October 10, 2015, at 2 p.m. at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. L. C. Harris and the Rev. David Harris officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in the adjoining cemetery. Mr. Pettus passed away at his home on Tuesday, October 6, 2015. He was a native and lifelong resident of Clay County and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served in the European Theatre of Operations as a Military Policeman. After his honorable discharge, he began a 33-year career with the Monsanto Chemical Company and rose through many positions of responsibility, ultimately retiring as Chief Millwright. After his retirement, Mr. Pettus became a full-time farmer, growing cattle, corn and cotton. He was also a devoted sports fan. Zenus followed Auburn football as well as JSU and Lineville Aggie football where his grandson, John Pettus was a player. He was also a member, deacon and former Chairman of Deacons at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. Mr. Pettus is survived by two daughters, Sue P. Schoggins (Ronnie) and Joan P. Dean (Fred) and one son, Bobby Pettus (Debbie), all of Lineville; four grandchildren, Scott Hill, Julie Hu(Peter), Joel Pettus (Dana) and John Pettus (Beth); six great-grandchildren, Cortney Pettus, Lauren Phillips, Faith Hu, Colton Pettus, Zack Hu and Layton Pettus. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jess Pettus and Carrie Lee Freeman Pettus; his wife of 61 years, Lucy "Mo Gig" Fetner Pettus; one sister, Florence Haynes and one brother, Wilson Pettus. Pallbearers will be Joel Pettus, Scott Hill, John Pettus, Donald Haynes, Ronald Haynes and Butch Cody. Honorary pallbearers will be Bob Boring, Danny Harris, Donald Edmonson, Sonny Whaley and Mr. Pettus' church family. The family extends a special "Thank You" to Dana Pettus and Hope Barngrover of Life Choice Hospice and to personal caregivers Judy Ellenburg, Dawn Elliott, Deborah Siggers and Scott Hill. The family will receive friends at Benefield Funeral Home in Lineville tonight from 5:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. and on Saturday at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church from noon until service time at 2 p.m. Online condolences may be sent to www.benefieldfuneralhome.com.
