Visitation for the family of Dr. Robert L Smith, 89, will be Sunday, May 25, 2014, at the Miller Funeral Home in Oxford from 2 - 4 p.m. Dr. Smith died on Thursday, May 15, 2014, in Anniston. Survivors include his wife, Karin Smith; sons, Brad Freeman (Lori), Tim Barton (Donna) and Michael Smith (Julie); daughters, Carry Mays, Kristine Sahlyeh (Vern); grandchildren, Benjamin Freeman, Megan Freeman, Justin Mays, Lindsay Tyson and Willa Sahlyeh. Dr. Smith was born in Twin Falls, Idaho, but relocated to California where he lived until 1980, when he moved to Alabama. He held a Bachelor of Science degree in Police Administration from USC, a masters in Criminology from California State Long Beach and a Juris Doctorate from Southwestern University. He was retired from Los Angeles City College as a police captain. In Alabama, he was the Criminal Justice Program Director at Gadsden State Community College and served as the Calhoun County Constable from 1984-1988. After retiring from GSCC, he taught part-time at both Jacksonville State University and Faulkner University. In his younger years, Dr. Smith was a Hollywood stuntman. He took a dive off a ship's masthead in "South of Pago Pago," wrestled with a dolphin underwater in the movie "Flipper" and was Robert Shaw's stunt double in "From Russia With Love."
