Margaret Ann Smith Charles, Child of God, 79, passed away peacefully June 6, 2014 at Regional Medical Center. Mrs. Charles was born August 21, 1934 in the Delta area to the late Ellis W. Smith & Ann Whitley Smith. Having spent most of her young life in Anniston, she was a graduate of Anniston High School and Business College. She was a loving wife, devoted mother and grandmother. Her work life included service to Anniston Parks and Recreation, Wakefield's, Buster Miles Chevrolet and Charles Sons Lumber Company. She was a CCHS Band Booster, Girl Scout Leader and member of Heflin Baptist Church. She enjoyed reading, shopping, needlework, sewing, and crafting. Survivors include her husband of 59+ years, Joe Charles; daughter, Jo Ann Charles Hoekenga; son-in-law, Steve Hoekenga; grandchildren, Emily Ann Hoekenga, Joseph Ryan Hoekenga and Charles Dean Hoekenga, all of Dothan; two brothers, James Ellis Smith of Phenix City and Jerome Wensley Smith of Houston, Texas; nieces, nephews and other extended family and friends. Visitation with the family will be Monday, June 9, 2014, from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. at Dryden Funeral Home with celebration of life service to immediately follow.
