JACKSONVILLE — Funeral services for Megan Elizabeth Brittain, 12, will be Friday, June 5, 2009 at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of Jacksonville, 230 Seventh St. N.E., with the Rev. Dr. Derek Staples and the Rev. David Byrd officiating. Burial will be in Hokes Bluff Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church from 3-8 p.m. this evening. K.L. Brown Funeral Home and Cremation Center will be directing services. Megan died at Children's Hospital in Birmingham on Tuesday, June 2, 2009 after an extended battle with cancer. She is survived by her father, Gary and two brothers, Ian and Bradley, all of Jacksonville; her grandparents, Edna Brittain, of Hokes Bluff, and Fred and Lamona (Hunter) Easterwood Jr., of Cullman and a number of aunts, uncles, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her mother, Sharon Easterwood Brittain. Megan was a student at Kitty Stone Elementary in Jacksonville where she served this past year as student council president. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Jacksonville where she was active in Sunday School, AWANA, and children's choir. She enjoyed sports, especially softball and basketball. Since her diagnosis with cancer, Megan has been active in raising funds for the American Cancer Society through Relay for Life and has been a spokesperson for blood donations through the American Red Cross. Our desire is to remember Megan in a way that makes a difference in other children's lives. We respectfully request that, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to: Children's Hospital, Megan Brittain Memorial Fund, Division of Pediatric Oncology, 1600 7th Avenue South, Birmingham, Ala. 35233.
