Eastaboga - Funeral services for Mr. John Edward Harris, 88, of Eastaboga, were Sunday, December 9 at 2 p.m. at Talladega Funeral Home with Bro. Joel Davis officiating. The family held a private burial service. Mr. Harris passed away Friday, December 7, 2012, at his residence. Ed was known by his friends as "Hog Harris". Ed graduated from White Plains High School in 1942. He served with the U.S. Navy for 18 months during World War II and his tours of duty included Russia, Japan and China. The Talladega Kiwanas Club awarded him the Agricultural Poultry Award in 1961 and the Agricultural Hog Award in 1980. He was an avid Alabama fan, never missed a Nascar race for 30 years and also enjoyed races at the Talladega Short Track. He was a member of the Bynum VFW Post. Ed is preceded in death by his parents, W. C. Harris and Molly Borden Harris; his sister, Mary Ellen Denson and two brothers, Doyle and Norris Harris. Ed is survived by his wife of 59 years, Betty Jo Ross Harris; his son, David Harris (Vicki), of Montevallo; two daughters, Debora Hudson, of Eastaboga and Dawn Harris, of Pell City; five grandchildren, Mark and Tim, of Tuscaloosa, Alyssa Harris, of Montevallo, Katrina Johns, of Saks and Johnathan Hunter Hudson, of Eastaboga; two great-grandchildren, Ross and Katie. He also leaves behind his sister, Willie Ann Albea, of Anniston. Pallbearers will be grandsons, Mark and Timothy Harris, Kenny Harris, Jeff Sims, Jimmy Hugh White and Phillip Denson. The family would also like to recognize the following men as honorary pallbearers, Ernie Holley, Robert Denson, Jerry Caldwell, Willard Dulaney, Chip Turner, Max Lathem, Mike, Chris and Cody Crow, Dr. Jett and the men of Refuge Baptist Church and Dry Valley Baptist Church. Special Thanks to Amedisys Home Health and Hospice for their love and great care. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Refuge Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 174, Lincoln, AL 35096. Talladega Funeral Home will direct the services.
