THOMASVILLE — Virginia Dunlap James died peacefully on Monday, June 1, 2014 at Piedmont Crossing Retirement Center in Thomasville. She was born on Oct. 9, 1922, in Wadesboro, the daughter of Evelyn and Preston Dunlap. She married Alexander L. James on Jan. 20, 1945 in Tampa, Fla. He preceded her in death on Nov. 14, 2001.
She graduated from Wadesboro High School and attended Woman's College (now UNCG) in Greensboro. A resident of Thomasville since 1968, Mrs. James was an active member of First Presbyterian Church and enjoyed her work there in a variety of volunteer positions. After her children were grown, she began a new career in the furniture industry, continuing to work into her 80s.
Mrs. James is survived by her daughter, Anne James Vandekatsey and husband Rene Vandekatsey of Naples, Fla.; her son, Alexander L. James Jr. and wife, Elizabeth Wright James of Greensboro; and grandchildren, Matthew Morris James and William Marshall James.
A memorial service was held at First Presbyterian Church in Thomasville on Saturday, June 7, 2014 at 2 p.m. with Pastor Michael E. Lamm officiating.
