Obituaries from the Past Week

Gawlikowski, Joni "G"
Joni "Mrs. G" Gawlikowski Joni Gawlikowski passed peacefully into the night after complications with pneumonia at St. Peter's Hospital in her beloved neighborhood of New Brunswick, NJ (despite her children's lionhearted efforts for many years to smuggle her to Florida to be near them) on Friday, March 13, 2015, where she resided since 1975. Joni was born on May 10, 1940 in Pasadena, Texas to U.S. Air Force Senior Master Sergeant John Nyberg and his exceptional wife, Amelia. She was married to David Adam Gawlikowski (deceased 1980) and has six children, 11 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. Children: Clayton Nyberg, wife Linda and children Chad, Tara, Taylor and Jordan of Austin, TX; Sean Nyberg, wife Jackie and daughters Sara and Amy of Tallahassee, FL; Vladimir, wife Dawn and sons Steffan, Cory and Trevor of West Palm Beach, FL; Casimir of Sacramento, CA; Bartek, wife Brenda and daughter Ava, of Lake Helen, FL; and Amalia and son Jacob, of New Brunswick, NJ. Joni is also survived by brother's Doug Nyberg of Index, WA and Pete Nyberg (wife Kay) of Round Rock, TX. Also, our entire extended family, the Hardy clan, whose companionship, love and support over 40 years strengthened our entire tribe. Joni created a fierce reputation in many states as a markedly inspiring, motivating teacher, cultural sage and altruistic life force to legions of students and friends. A talented Bio-Chemist and Immunologist, Joni was awarded Fellowships and Scholarships from Stephen F. Austin, Middle Tennessee State, Rollins College (BS), Rutgers and Johns Hopkins Universities (MS). Joni worked at the Cook College Science Department before becoming a teacher at Green Brook, St. Peter's, St. Pius X, and Seton Hall Prep High Schools and The Cascade Academy in California. "Mrs. G", as she was widely known, then continued professorships at Bowdoin College and Rutgers University. Joni retired from the U.S. Navy Reserve after 20 years of service and was a prolific volunteer at Camp New Day for the developmentally disabled where her undying compassion and culinary artistry will be sorely missed. She seized life by traveling, birding, kayaking, cooking, taking her grandchildren on nature tours and was an avid theater goer (also leveraging extra credit, and her concrete will, onto students to act, dance and sing in school plays) and masterfully navigating the streets, arts, and civilization of New York City. Joni's wishes were to have her body donated to medical research (because even in death, she could not cease to educate others). She elected to forego a funeral in place of a "Celebration of Life" event for her that will take place at Rutgers Gardens in New Brunswick, NJ on May 30, 2015 from 8 am -12 noon. Donations towards this entertaining and communal event (to "Joni's Wish", c/o Brenda Gawlikowski, 225 Garden Street, Lake Helen, FL 32744) or to the wonderful Camp New Day ( www.newdayweb.com ), are graciously accepted as per Joni's desires and will contribute to the smiles and joyous tears of so many. "You never truly know what is occurring in others people's lives, so don't judge. Always assume there is something great in everyone". - Joni Ann Gawlikowski
