Carole Eichenbaum AGE: 72 • Carole Eichenbaum, loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend, died Friday, May 1, 2015, at Tidewell Hospice in Bradenton, Florida. She was 72. The cause was complications from Alzheimer's disease. Mrs. Eichenbaum was a public school teacher for 25 years in Highland Park, New Jersey, a caring and patient mentor who encouraged critical and free-thinking. She never gave up on someone who struggled or strayed, be it a student or one of her own children. She fought against racial injustice and for gender equality, and was a fierce defender of a woman's right to choose, serving on the board of Planned Parenthood of Central New Jersey, and was an active member of the League of Women Voters. She cherished spending time with her family and many friends, particularly during gatherings on the lawn of Tanglewood in Lenox, Massachusetts, and elsewhere in her beloved Berkshires. Carole Michelle Bender was born Jan. 23, 1943, in Brooklyn, New York, and graduated from James Madison High School in 1960. She received a bachelor's degree in social studies from Brooklyn College in 1965 and a master's degree in education from Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey, in 1975. Mrs. Eichenbaum was a long-time member and supporter of Anshe Emeth Memorial Temple in New Brunswick. She was preceded in death by her parents, Irving Bender and Bernice (Greenspan) Friedman. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Samuel Eichenbaum of The Villages, Florida; sons, David Eichenbaum of Washington, D.C., Steven Eichenbaum of Bradenton, and Peter Eichenbaum of New York; a sister, Judy Johnson of Birmingham, England; daughters in-law Debra Eichenbaum of Washington and Lisa Kyle of New York; and, most importantly, six grandchildren — Sarah, Jon, Isaac, Isabel, Emma and Max — whom she loved more than anything. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on June 7, 2015, at Anshe Emeth, 222 Livingston Avenue, New Brunswick, New Jersey. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to Planned Parenthood and the Alzheimer's Association.
