Owens, Donald Reed - 72, Toms River
Donald Reed Owens AGE: 72 • Toms River Donald Reed Owens, 72, of Toms River, New Jersey passed away Saturday, December 20th at his hideaway in warm Little Torch Key, Florida. He was born on November 8, 1942 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to the late Henry and Helen Reed Owens. Donald and his family lived in Abington, Pennsylvania and summered for over 50 years in Seaside Park, New Jersey. He lived in either Seaside Park or Toms River for most of his adult life. Donald served in the United States Army and was a Vietnam veteran. After returning home from Southeast Asia he worked successfully as a crew member on sailing yachts traveling the Caribbean. Donald's interest in the ocean and sailing continued for the remainder of his life and later he obtained his Captain's License from the US Coast Guard and worked delivering boats from the New York area to Florida and the Caribbean. He used that knowledge to get a job with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection(NJDEP) taking water samples to assure the quality of shellfish in the state. He was an active participant in the Barnegat Bay Yacht Racing Association, competing for over 35 years in the E-scow, sneakbox and flying scot classes. He was generous, outgoing, and once meeting him, hard to forget. All of his various life experiences and characteristics made Donald a world class story teller who will be missed by all who heard one or more of his stories. He is survived by his brother Henry Owens and wife Ellen of Camarilo, California and four nieces and nephews; Bill White and his wife Michele of Tuscaloosa, Alabama; Ellie White of Hatboro, Pennsylvania; Hank Owens of Ventura, California and Reed Owens of Camarilo, California. A celebration of his life will be held at the Seaside Park Yacht Club in late June giving those who knew and loved him a chance to retell some of his stories and provide closure at the last windward leg of his final race. Donations in Donald's memory can be made to the Seaside Park Yacht Club Memorial Endowment Fund, The Tri-Boro First Aid Squad, Seaside Park or the Seaside Park Fire Department.
