John Politis AGE: 65 • Holmdel John Politis, 65, of Holmdel, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, April 13, 2014 at Riverview Medical Center in Red Bank. He was born on December 10, 1948 in Brooklyn, NY, to Thomas and Athena Politis. He was a graduate of New Utrecht High School in 1967 and received a bachelor's degree in biology from Hunter College in 1971. In 1969, he moved to East Brunswick with his parents and brother, Stavros. In 1987, he relocated to Colts Neck, where he raised his family with much care and love. In his final days, he resided in Holmdel with his beloved sister. John was the proud proprietor of the Red Oak Diner in Hazlet for 35 years. He was an active benefactor to St. Jude Children's Hospital, Kimisis Tis Theotokou Greek Orthodox Church, and to many causes during his life. He was a board member at Bayshore Community Hospital and because of his love for running, he founded the Bayshore Autumn Chase. Also, he was a movie buff and enjoyed fishing. He was a beloved member of the community. He was predeceased by his parents, Thomas and Athena (Vastardis) Politis and his brother-in-law, Emmanuel Vastardis. John is survived by his wife, Maryann (Schmidt) Politis; his loving children, Alexandra, Christina, Marielle, Daniel Habib and Nicole Habib. He is also survived by his dear sister, Irene Vastardis of Holmdel, and his dear brother and sister-in-law, Stavros and Maria Politis of Athens, Greece. John also had many cousins, nieces and nephews that loved him very much. He will be sadly missed, but never forgotten. Arrangements were entrusted to the Shore Point Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 3269 State Rt. 35 N, Hazlet. Family and friends were invited to visit on Tuesday, April 15th from 9 AM to 12 PM at Kimisis Tis Theotokou Greek Orthodox Church, Holmdel. A funeral liturgy was offered at 12:00 noon. Edward M. Richter AGE: 79 • Helmetta Edward M. Richter, 79, of Freehold Twp., formerly of Helmetta, died Wednesday, April 16, 2014 at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Born and raised in Queens, NY, Ed moved to Spotswood in the mid-50's and then to Helmetta in the 70's. He settled in Freehold Twp. with his son Ernest, and his family last year. He served in the U.S. Army as a paratrooper during WWII. After his service, Ed went on to become an Insurance Agent and Financial Planner with the Monumental Insurance Company until his retirement several years ago. He was a long-time member of St. John's Greek Orthodox Church of Perth Amboy. Together with his son Ernie, he enjoyed helping coach his grandchildren's Pop Warner football team in East Brunswick. Ed also enjoyed serving as a poll worker during the state, municipal and national elections in Helmetta. He enjoyed talking to everyone he met and always making new friends. Together with his late wife, Eleanor, and his partners, Ed's biggest enjoyment was owning standard bred horses and racing them at the Freehold and Meadowlands racetracks. Predeceased by his wife, Eleanor, in June 2012, he is survived by his sons, Edward Joseph Richter and his wife Debra, of Milltown and Ernest Richter and his wife Kathleen, of Freehold, formerly of Spotswood; his grandchildren, Brian, Brittany, Patrick, Steven and Michael, and; his great-granddaughter, Gabrielle. Funeral services will begin at 10:15 AM Tuesday from Spotswood Funeral Home, 475 Main Street, Spotswood, followed by interment in the Reformed Church Cemetery, Spotswood. The family will receive friends Monday from 2:00 to 4:00 PM and again from 7:00 to 9:00 PM at the funeral home with a Panachida service at 8:00 PM.
