Adelaide "Addie" Harriet Gabel
AGE: 89 • Oakhurst
Adelaide "Addie" Harriet Gabel, 89, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 1, 2013, at her home in Oakhurst. Born Adelaide Harriet Hockenberg (Hocky) to beloved parents, David and Belle Hocky in New York City on May 24, 1924, she has resided in Oakhurst for 63 years. Addie was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend who chose to devote herself as a caregiver, matriarch, and loving advocate to her seven children, fifteen grandchildren, spouses, nephews, nieces, cousins, siblings, neighbors, and anyone within reach of her open arms. She was meticulous in her concern for the many she loved. An avid lover of the beach, the outdoors, reading, hiking, and birding, she was also a graceful tennis player with an un-returnable slice forehand. Her generosity extended to the greater community - Addie volunteered as a tern watcher in Sandy Hook and as a reader in an Asbury Park elementary school. Mrs. Gabel is survived by her husband, Dr. Harold Gabel, with whom she has been happily married for 67 years. She is also survived by her children, Robert, Ted, Michael, George, Kathy, Steven, and Daniel, as well as their spouses and 15 grandchildren, Pearl, David, Alan, Maddie, Jeremy, Max, Zander, Lauren, Mark, Isaac, Eli, Eve, Belle, Jessie, and Jamie; and her sisters, Betty Woolf and husband Milton, and Minna Passman and husband Richard; and brother, Joseph Hocky and wife Fay. Shiva will be observed at 1048 Norwood Ave., Oakhurst, from Aug. 3 to Aug. 5 between 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Clean Ocean Action, c/o Cindy Zipf, Highlands, NJ.
