Albert L. Szurka, 95, of Hazlet, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Nov. 24, 2013, at Bayshore Community Hospital in Holmdel. Albert was born on Aug. 27, 1918 in Cambridge, MA. He grew up in Riverhead, NY and later in life moved to Newark. In 1958, he settled in Hazlet. Albert was a retired Diesel Mechanic for Paul's Trucking Company in Woodbridge. He was also a proud U.S. Air Force veteran, serving in WW II from 1942 to 1945. During his service, Albert received the European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon and 3 Bronze Service Stars. He was predeceased by his parents, Anthony and Judwiga Szurka, his dear brothers and sisters, Edwin Szurka, Anthony Szurka and Irene Horton, his son-in-law, Charles Schmidt and his beloved wife, Eleanor (Gawlik) Szurka. Albert is survived by his loving children, Kathryn Kowalski and her husband Stanley of Burlington and Patricia Schmidt of Hazlet, along with his cherished grandchildren, Brian Dischler, Allison Schmidt, and his adored great-grandchildren, Logan Dischler, Gabrielle Dischler and Addison Oettinger. Family and friends are invited to visit for a memorial visitation from 10 a.m. to 12 noon Saturday, Nov. 30 at the Shore Point Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 3269 State Rt. 35 N, Hazlet. A prayer service will be offered at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 30 at the funeral home. In respect of Albert's wishes, he was privately cremated and his ashes will be interred at Shoreland Memorial Gardens, Hazlet.
