Barbara A. Harned

Barbara A. Harned, who served as New Jersey's Chief Administrative Law Judge from 1995 to 2000, died in her Somerset, NJ home last week. She was 66. In her distinguished career as an attorney, Judge Harned was also a Deputy Attorney General in the New Jersey Department of Law and Public Safety, Division of Law from 1979 to 1995 and from 2000 to 2004. She was awarded the J.D. from Seton Hall School of Law, Newark, NJ in 1978 where she served as an editor of the Law Review. After graduation, she was appointed Law Secretary to the Superior Court of New Jersey, Appellate Division. Previous to receiving her law degree, Ms. Harned was employed by AT&T in Piscataway, NJ as a computer programmer, and after her retirement from the Attorney General's office, she worked for several years at Princeton Public Library, Princeton, NJ. She graduated from Douglass College with a B.A. in English in 1968 and was active in the alumnae association. Barbara A. Harned was born in Plainfield, NJ on July 17, 1946. Her parents, LeRoy A. Harned, Jr. and the former Elizabeth A. Groves, owned and operated Harned's Grocery Store in Dunellen, NJ for many years. In her leisure time, Barbara loved home decorating and entertaining her family and many friends. She was an avid reader and a witty converstionalist who enjoyed telling amusing stories. A loving sister and devoted aunt, Barbara will be greatly missed.
She is survived by two sisters, Nancy Koze and Susan Roth; two brothers, Robert Harned and Daniel Harned; three nephews; eight nieces; four grand nephews and five grand nieces.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, January 8 at 8pm in the Hillsborough Funeral Home, 796 US Hwy 206, Hillsborough, NJ 08844. Visiting will be from 2 - 4 p.m. and 7 - 8 p.m. on Wednesday prior to the service.
