Basil J. "Buddy" DeSalvo Sr.

Basil "Buddy" J. DeSalvo Sr.

AGE: 83 • Manahawkin

Basil "Buddy" J. DeSalvo, Sr., 83, of Manahawkin, passed Friday, March 1, 2013, surrounded by his family. Born in Bronx, NY, he is a U.S. Army veteran. A former resident of Dumont, NJ, he was employed at the New York Times for 36 years before retiring to Ocean County. Buddy served as a Past Grand Knight in the Knights of Columbus, Annunciation Council and was active in the Italian American Club.

Predeceased by his beloved wife of 60 years, Frances (Campo), he is survived by four children, Donna Jones of Manahawkin, Basil, Jr. and wife Geraldine DeSalvo of Barnegat, Michael and wife Carmasita DeSalvo of Manahawkin, and Dina DeSalvo of Little Egg Harbor; his three grandchildren, Alison Jones, Daniella DeSalvo, and Kelly Mecca; two great-grandchildren, Logan and Gavin Callahan; his sister, Corinne Cromwell; his brother, Nicholas and wife Joan DeSalvo.

Buddy lived his life fully and passionately. He was an avid Mets fan who enjoyed fishing on his boat, playing golf, vacationing, visiting friends in Florida, and playing cards. Many of his happiest times were the simplest, being surrounded by loved ones at a family dinner or barbeque. He was generous and welcomed friends to be "adopted" into his family. The memory of his life and the good times we shared will live in our hearts forever. Although Buddy will be greatly missed by many, it is comforting to know that he will join his wife Frances in heaven, and he will be laid to rest on the anniversary of their first date.

A Memorial Mass will be offered at 10 a.m. Friday, March 8 at St. Mary's Church, Barnegat. Entombment of cremains to follow in Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Arneytown. In lieu of flowers, donations to Deborah Hospital Foundation are appreciated. Barnegat Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements (www.BarnegatFH.com).
