Demosthenes John Sakelaris

Demosthenes John Sakelaris, 96, longtime resident of Marlton, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 2, 2014. He was a member of the "greatest generation". Beloved husband of the late Carole A. Sakelaris. Dee J. is survived by his children, Byron and his wife Carol of Westmont, Paul of Maple Shade, and Anastasia and her husband Michael Maguire of Marlton; grandson, Sean Maguire of Marlton; cousins and numerous nieces and nephews. Born in Lowell, MA to Anastasia and John Sakelarios, "Tootie" was one of nine children. He attended Bartlett Jr. High School and graduated from Lowell High School in 1935. Like many of his time, he and his brothers were called to war in 1942. He served as a Tec 5 Corporal with the 433rd Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion with the U.S. 5th Army. Arriving first in Casablanca, he participated in the liberation of Africa, Sicily, Italy, southern France and the Rhineland. His outfit was awarded the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Ribbon with the Bronze Service Arrowhead. He was discharged through the U.S. 7th Army at the end of WWII
and returned to civilian life. Residing in Asbury Park, he met his future wife, Carol Ann Schneider. They were married in 1954. Tootie and Carole came to Camden in 1955 to open a Carvel Ice Cream Store. Later known as Dee's Ice Cream Drive-In, they remained in business until 1999. He was a lifelong member of Saint Thomas Greek Orthodox Church in Cherry Hill, and belonged to the VFW
Post #7677 in Medford. He was hardworking, an avid sports fan, an excellent cook, a loving husband to his wife, a loving father to his children and a loving grandfather to his grandson. He will be missed by his family and friends.
Relatives and friends are invited to the viewing from 9:45 to 11:45 a.m. Saturday Jan. 11, 2104 at St. Thomas Greek Orthodox Church, 615 Mercer St., Cherry Hill, NJ 08002. Funeral Service will be 12 noon at the church. Interment will follow at Locustwood Memorial Park, Cherry Hill. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Dee's name to Disabled American Veterans (www.dav.org
