Donald F. McGarry, 84, of Toms River, passed away on Thursday, April 3, 2014, at Fountain View Care Center. Born in Orange on Oct. 27, 1929 to the late John and Mary Smith McGarry, he grew up in West Orange. Don served in the U.S. Army
during 1951 to l953. He lived in Shark River Hills where he joined the Fire Co. in 1960 as a firefighter
. In 1970, he moved to Wall Twp. where he joined the South Wall Fire Co. and was elected as Chief in 1977. Don and Elizabeth (Betsy) were married in April 1977 and moved to the Silverton section of Toms River.
Don loved Lionel trains, the NY Giants and the NY Mets. Don was a member of Train Collectors Assn., the Holiday City Fishing Club and he enjoyed Saturday nights at Albert Hall, especially the Picking Shed.
His greatest love was for his family…. his wife, his eight children and eight grandchildren. He always spoke of his gratitude for his wonderful friends. He loved to tell others about his trip to Ireland and the many trips he took with Betsy and their close friends. His devoted and loving friends and family were always there for him during his years dealing with Parkinson's Disease.
Don McGarry has a long and distinguished career and record of achievement in fire service for over 50 years. He joined the Shark River Hills Fire Company in Neptune in 1960, serving various positions during his tenure until 1970, when he moved to Wall Township. He then joined the South Wall Fire Company in 1970, and obtained the role of Fire Chief in 1977. In 1978 Don moved to Silverton and joined the Silverton Volunteer Fire Company (SVFC) as an active firefighter. He held the rank of Fire Police Captain, House Committee Chairman, and was a Trustee for 15 years. He also served as Chairman of the Thanksgiving food drive for the company. He was an Exempt member of Shark River Hills and a Life Member of SVFC and received the 200 Club Award for Meritorious Service in 2006. In 1997, 2005 and 2011, Don received the SVFC President's Award for Excellence - he is the only member of the company to receive this award three times.
He was predeceased by his son, Edward and his brothers, John and Francis. He is survived by his loving wife, Betsy; daughter, Eileen Munn and husband Bob of Forked River; son, Donald of Port St. Lucie, FL; son, George and wife Heide of Stuart, FL; stepson, Kevin of Brazil; stepdaughter, Mary Beth Hartman Kerber and husband David of Palm Springs, FL; stepson, Rick Hasney and wife Tammy of Levittown, PA; stepdaughter, Laura Hasney of Niskayuna, NY; and grandchildren, Marybeth Munn, Katie Munn, Elizabeth Hartman, Douglas Hartman Tyler Garrity, Megan Garrity, Ricky Hasney, Grace Hasney, and many other loving family members.
Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, April 6 at Silverton Memorial Funeral Home, Church Road, Toms River. Funeral Mass will be at 9:15 a.m. Monday, April 7 at St. Luke's Church, Old Freehold Road., TR; you may arrive at the funeral home 8:15 a.m. Interment Brigadier Gen. Wm C.
