Ernest "Ernie" Altobelle

AGE: 87 • Toms River

Ernest "Ernie" Altobelle, 87, of Toms River, passed away Monday, April 4, 2011, at home. Born Feb. 21, 1924 in Rutland, Vt., he lived in Bayonne before moving to Toms River in 1955. Ernie was a World War II veteran, serving as a sergeant with the 1386th Army Air Force Unit. He proudly received the Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal and European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal. After serving his country, Ernie worked for the Department of Defense for 34 years. He was past commander of VFW Post 9503 of Berkeley and a member of Toms River Elks Lodge #1875. Ernie was a parishioner of St. Joseph's Church, Toms River.

He is predeceased by his son, Lawrence, in 1976. Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Margaret (Lynch) Altobelle; his daughter, Regina Mitchell of Toms River; three grandchildren, Christopher Butler and his wife Wendy, Nicole Butler and Kaylee Rose Mitchell; three great-grandchildren, Christian, Alexus and Gianna; and many caring brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, April 10 at Anderson and Campbell Funeral Home, 703 Main St., Toms River. A funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 11 at St. Joseph's Church, Toms River. Burial will follow at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Toms River.
