, he joined the U.S. Army
as a medic, serving three years in Australia and New Guinea, returning in 1945 as a Captain.
After residencies at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis and Bellevue Hospital in New York City, Dr. Hummel began practicing surgery at Fitkin Hospital in Neptune (now Jersey Shore MC ), eventually moving full-time to Point Pleasant Hospital, where he served as Chief of Staff in the late 1960's. For many years. he also practiced general medicine in Brick, as well as serving as the school physician for Brick Twp. High School.
Fritz is survived by his wife of 72 years, Ruth Conklin Hummel, also an alumna of Asbury Park HS, where they originally met. They became reacquainted in college (on a blind date) and married in 1940. Also surviving him are daughters, Suzanne Hummel-Bell and her husband, Jeff, and Sylvia Hummel and her partner Thomas H. Dent, and a son, Karl F. Hummel and his wife Abby.
