Gordon Schaaf, 75, was Promoted to Glory on Tuesday, April 22, 2014, at Manor By The Sea in Ocean Grove. Gordon was born in Newark and lived most of his life at the Shore Area. He graduated from Freehold Regional High School in 1958, then enlisted and served in the United States Army from1962-1965. He was primarily stationed in Germany as an Orthopedic Specialist.

Gordon began his orthotic career under the direction of the late Kenneth Clayton of Clayton Surgical Services in Point Pleasant. Throughout his career, many of the shore area residents were recipients of his orthopedic braces, artificial limbs and shoes. He retired in 2000 from JFK Rehabilitation Facility in Edison, New Jersey.

Gordon had a horticulture family background and was a lifetime gardner who enjoyed planting his favorite vegetables and flowers every year. He enjoyed playing golf with family, friends and co-workers. He was a member of the Shore Casting and Fishing Club out of Point Pleasant for many years and won several awards for longest cast and "biggest" catch of fish in numerous tournaments up and down the Jersey Coast.

Gordon was a very loyal and devoted Yankee fan for over 60 years, attending many of the home games.

Gordon was predeceased in life by his mother and father, Anna and Norman Schaaf. He leaves behind his wife, Mary Jane; his daughter and her husband, Debra and Shawn Nielsen; and his precious grandson, Magnus. He also leaves behind 3 brothers, Norman and his wife Gail of Tennesse, Russell and his companion Halina of Point Pleasant, and Raymond and his wife Claire of North Carolina; 3 nephews, 1 niece, 3 great-nephews and 5 great-nieces, his Aunt Dorothy of Virginia, his 4 legged friend Lily, his Salvation Army friends, and his neighbors on Curtis Place.

Cremation was private under the direction of Ely Funeral Home in Neptune. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 10 at The Salvation Army. In lieu of flowers, you may make a memorial donation in his name to The Salvation Army, 605 Asbury Ave., Asbury Park, NJ 07712.
