AGE: 90 BRIELLE
Harold "Hal" R. Jr. Armstrong, 90, of Brielle passed away on Nov. 6. at Jersey Shore Medical Center in Neptune. Harold was born on April 13, 1918 in Sayreville. He grew up in South River where he was a proud Eagle Scout. He graduated from Rutgers University in 1939 where he was a member of the Alpha Rho chapter of the Chi Psi Lodge. In April 1942 he married Helen Clayton and entered the U.S. Army Air Corps. After training in Hondo, Texas he served during the remainder of WWII as a navigator in the South Pacific, rising to the rank of Major. After the war, he joined his father and uncles in the running of Armstrong Sales Company, a Pontiac automobile dealership in South River. In 1968 he and his family moved to Sea Girt, where he became part owner of The Stadium Restaurant. An avid golfer, Hal was a life-long member of Spring Lake Golf Club. While he had played golf courses all over the world, one of his fondest memories was of a hole-in-one on #3 at Pine Valley. Among the many civic organizations he belonged to, were the Elks, Lions, and Masons. He had been a member of the Vestry at both Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in South River and the Church of St. Uriel the Archangel, Sea Girt.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold R. Armstrong, Sr. and Christina Goodman Armstrong, of Lakewood; his brother, Richard F. Armstrong, of Middletown and his son-in-law Dr. James M. Lynch, of Manasquan. He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Helen; daughter, Christine and son-in-law, Gary Dishman; daughter, Hannah Armstrong Lynch; son, David and daughter-in-law, Barbara and son Timothy and daughter-in-law, Nancy. His grandchildren include, Neal and Hayley Lynch, David, Jr. and Reid Armstrong, and Morgan and Connor Armstrong.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Neary-Quinn Funeral Home at 39 South Street, Manasquan. In lieu of Flowers, donations to Deborah Hospital, 20 Pine Mill Road, Browns Mills, NJ 08015. Tribute's can be posted at www.mem.com.
