Hugh C. Applegate

Hugh Applegate, 91, of Beachwood died on February 14, 2014. Born and raised in Toms River, he has resided in Beachwood for over 60 years. He was employed by Ciba-Geigy of Toms River for many years before retiring. He proudly served his country in the US Naval Coast Guard from 1942-1947, during World War 2. He served aboard several ships including, the US Coast Guard Cutter Rhododendron and the Sorrel and, the USS Peconic. After Service, he joined and flew for the Civil Air Patrol (Sunset Watch). He was a life member of the VFW Post #9503, Berkeley Township and the American Legion Post #129 of Toms River. He also coached Toms River Little Indians Pop Warner Football for many years. His hobbies included, building boats, dune buggies and airplanes. Biking, kayaking, woodworking, and flying his Kit Fox experimental airplane were his passions. He is predeceased by his parents Albert and Elizabeth (Hyers) Applegate; his 11 siblings; wife Ruth Cline Applegate; granddaughter Katie Waller and son-in-law Robert Okuniewski. Surviving are his wife Eleanore Symington Applegate; his children, Hugh Waller and wife Pam, Kim C. Applegate and wife Renate, Georgia L.Walsh and husband Gerald, Brion B. Applegate and wife Sabrina, Wendy L. Okuniewski, Ruthan Schaeffer and husband David, Christopher H. Applegate and wife Jennifer, and his stepson George "Mickey" Symington; his grandchildren, Todd and Ana Waller, Keith and Dana Applegate, Erika and Brian Walton, Meredith and Dante Costagliola, Brendon Walsh, Gabrielle Applegate, Sofie Applegate, Leigh and Scott Healy, Alexis and Anthony Castellano, Lara Okuniewski, Tyler Okuniewski, David Maui Schaeffer, Christopher H. Applegate Jr. and Camryn Applegate; his step-grandchildren, Dana Mauro and Candace Symington; great grandchildren, MacArthur, Mackenzie, Greyson, Colette, Jackson and Lilliana; and his step great grandchildren, Tucker, Mason and Gunnar and, his good friend Betty Waller. A memorial gathering will be offered for relatives and friends on Friday, February 21st, from 4-7pm at the Mastapeter Funeral Home, 270 Atlantic City Blvd., Bayville.
