John Robert (Bob) Baechle, 83, of Holmdel, died Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2014. Bob was born Feb. 22, 1930 Ephrata, PA, he attended St. Mary's High School, Lancaster, OH & Ohio State University
, Columbus OH, where he was a member of Sigma Xi fraternity, and earned a Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering & then his PhD. Bob worked at the Antennae Labs at Ohio State while pursuing his PhD, followed by an accomplished career at Bell Laboratories in Whippany & Holmdel NJ. Bob held several positions on the Parsippany-Troy Hills Library Board, including President & Treasurer. After retiring from Bell Labs, he taught Mathematics & Computer Science at Ocean County College, Toms River NJ and NJIT, Newark, NJ. He served as an Officer & member of the Executive Board of the Shrewsbury Power Squadrons.
Bob was preceded in death by his loving wife of 54 years, Julie Parsell Baechle; his parents, Robert John & Helen Kennedy Baechle; 2 grandchildren, Gerald A. Jennings Jr., and Jeremy Mark Jennings, and several aunts. He is survived by his brother, James J. Baechle & wife Chris of NY; children, Cheryl L. Jennings of NJ, Paula B. Miller & her husband Joseph of NC, James J. Baechle II of OH, Karen S. Smythe & her husband James of NJ & Lisa B. Torres & her husband Louis of NJ; grandchildren, Dwayne A. Jennings & wife Holly of WI, Eric M. Baechle of HI/DC, Michael Baechle of WA, Samantha B. Rankin & her husband Jeremy of WA, James F. Smythe of NJ, Kim B. Torres of NJ, and Joe B. Torres of NJ/FL; 3 great-grandchildren, Corrado Jennings, Gabrielle Jennings & Lillian Jennings; and a very special friend, Norma Bagby of OH.
Bob loved his family & enjoyed spending time with them. He also loved sailing, reading, music, computers, travel, science & engineering, walking, education of any kind, activities with the many organizations he belonged to, including the Holmdel Half Century Club, IEEE & Mensa.
A memorial mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 21, 2014 at St. Benedict's Catholic Church, 165 Bethany Road, Holmdel. A gathering of friends and family will be held following the church service at the Holmdel Senior/Community Center, 6 Crawfords Corner Road, Holmdel (next to the Post Office).
