Joseph Holmes, 86, passed into the loving arms of his maker on June 15, 2013 at Bartley Nursing Home, Jackson NJ. Devoted family members and friends were with him to the end. He bravely fought Alzheimer's disease for many years. Joe was born September 1, 1926 to George Bodine Holmes and Anna Meirs Holmes in the Cream Ridge area of Upper Freehold Township, NJ where he lived most of his life. The eldest son of three siblings, Joe attended Upper Freehold Township Allentown school system, graduating at the top of his class in 1944. Upon graduation he enlisted in the Army
Air Corp, receiving an honorable discharge at the end of the war. Joe attended Rutgers University, studying geology and agro-business. For 25 years Joe was a dairy and grain farmer carrying on a family farming legacy reaching back over three hundred years on the "Holmes-Stead Farm". In 1968 he co-founded the Mulcahy-Holmes Real Estate Agency. He excelled in the real estate business, due in large part to an extraordinary work ethic. Joe was appreciated in the community as an honorable man of the highest caliber, and demonstrated the utmost integrity in all of his dealings. Joe was extremely devoted to his family, church and community. He was a member, trustee and elder of the Allentown Presbyterian Church, member of the Imlaystown Baptist Church, and an original member and president of the Friends of Ye Olde Yellow Meeting House. He served as a member of the Upper Freehold Regional Board of Education for eighteen years, four as president. He was a member of Upper Freehold Planning Board for eighteen years, chairman for eight years and served as Upper Freehold Tax Assessor. He was a charter member and trustee of the New Egypt Elks and life member of the New Egypt American Legion. He was a Director of New Egypt Building and Loan, member of NJ Agricultural Society and the NJ Farm Bureau, member and vice-president of the Board of Directors of Monmouth County Board of Realtors and its Land Institute, member of the Monmouth, Ocean, and Burlington multiple listing service and the National Association of Independent Fee Appraisers and Strategic Planning Committee. He was inducted into the 1992-93 Who's Who Elite Registry of Extraordinary Professionals. Joe was fond of traveling the country with his wife in their travel trailer, visiting all 50 states. He enjoyed hunting, reading, playing games, and being with family and friends. He was strongly devoted to his family and was loved in kind. He will be sorely missed.
Joe was preceded in death by his father, George Bodine Holmes, mother Anna Meirs Holmes, and sister Helen Holmes Brick. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Roberta Schooley Holmes, son Joseph David Holmes and wife Sandra, daughter Kathryn Holmes Arbuckle and husband Keith, son George Bodine Holmes and wife Alice, grandchildren Matthew David Holmes and wife Karen, Andrew Bruere Holmes and wife Kirsten, Wayne Philip Holmes, Daniel George Holmes, great grandchildren Boden O. Holmes and Jasper A. Holmes, brother Charles M. Holmes and sister Ruth H. Honadle, and several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and many friends.
Visiting hours will be held Tuesday, June 18 from 6pm to 9pm and Wednesday, June 19 from 9am to 10 am at Peppler Funeral Home, South Main St, Allentown NJ. Services to follow, Wednesday at 11am at the Imlaystown Baptist Church. Interment Ye Olde Yellow Meeting House, 70 Old Meeting House Rd, Imlaystown, NJ.
