Joseph Samuel Gachina 88, of Toms River, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 15, 2014, with his family by his side. Joseph is predeceased by his parents, Samuel and Anna; sister, Elizabeth; and nephew, Peter. He is survived by his loving wife, Stanis of 61 years; daughter, Jo Ann and husband Bruce Vari of Toms River; son, Stephen and daughter-in-law, Maureen of Freehold; and daughter, Stanis Gail of Toms River; three grandsons, Aaron, Joseph and Michael; and nieces, Liz and Peggy. Joseph was born and raised in Newark and graduated from Central High in 1944. He served in the United States Navy
. He moved to Toms River in 1946 where he worked at Lakehurst Naval Engineering Center and later retired from Fort Monmouth as a Procurement Analyst. Graduated from Rutgers and Monmouth University with a major in Psychology. While attending Monmouth College, he organized the first basketball team the "Hawks" and was made captain. Most of his life he was a professional accordionist and was a member of the Musicians Union 399. Joe will be remembered for his sense of humor, his love of life and family, his integrity and honor. He will be greatly missed.
A visitation will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, March 19 at "The Family Owned Carmona Bolen Home for Funerals, 412 Main St., Toms River. A funeral mass will take place at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 20 at Saint Joseph's R.C. Church, Toms River. Burial will follow at Saint Joseph Cemetery.
