Laurie L. O'Brien (nee Purdy), 67, of the West Point Island section of Lavallette, died Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2013. Born in Jersey City, she was raised in Point Pleasant Beach and lived in Brick before moving to Lavallette 25 years ago. She worked as a teacher at Brick Memorial High School for 38 years where she served as Physical Education Department Chair, worked on the Project Graduation Committee, was a cheerleading coach and worked for the Brick Township Board of Education for 42 years. She was a member of the Lavallette Recreation Committee, Lavallette Yacht club, Lavallette Beach Patrol and the West Point Island Civic Association. She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Lavallette.

Laurie is preceded in death by her father, Elmer Purdy. Surviving are her mother, Evelyn Purdy of Toms River; her children, Whitney Staub and her husband Peter of Silver Spring, MD, Gregory Riello of Brick, and Amy Riello of Lavallette; her sisters, Nadine Larsen of Sea Girt, Denise Purdy Thompson of Toms River, and Robin McNulty of Point Pleasant Beach; and her three grandchildren, Ethan, Nathan, and Evelyn. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews, cousins and her beloved dog, Millie.

The family will receive relatives and friends for a memorial gathering from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday, March 1, 2013 at the Timothy E. Ryan Home for Funerals, 995 Fischer Blvd., Toms River. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, March 2, 2013 at Faith Lutheran Church, Lavallette.
