Lloyd Whitley Hoagland, Jr.

Lloyd Whitley Hoagland Jr., 97, formally of Somerville and Branchburg, NJ, passed away on November 10, 2012 at Seacrest Village in Little Egg Harbor, NJ. Lloyd was born on August 8, 1915 in Somerville, NJ, son of Lloyd Whitley Hoagland, Sr. and Elsie Lafferty Hoagland. He attended Somerville Elementary School, completed his secondary education at Staunton Military Academy in Staunton, VA. and attended Washington and Lee University. He joined his father in The Hoagland Pontiac Agency in 1937 and became partner and business manager until the business dissolved in1978. Lloyd was very proud of the fact that the agency was the oldest Pontiac dealership in the country. Lloyd was an account manager for his son-in-law's business in Pluckemin, NJ. He served as Sergeant at Arms for the Somerset County Superior Court of New Jersey until his retirement in 1993. Lloyd was Past President of the Somerville Rotary Club
and Past Master of the Free and Accepted Mason Society. He was a member of the Second Reformed Church of Somerville, NJ. He had a love of athletics and played in various community softball and volleyball leagues. He had been a member of The Raritan Valley Country Club and The All Weather Tennis Club. Lloyd also participated in Austin Healy Road Rally events with a group of his close friends. One of his greatest passions was his love of music of the Big Band Era and he had a significant collection of original 78 rpm records. He was a proud member of the Pool, Poker, Chowder and Marching Society which met monthly and was comprised of many of his local Somerville business associates. He and his late wife belonged to a bridge club for many years. He will be remembered for his sense of humor and quick wit.
Mr. Hoagland was predeceased by his first wife, Elizabeth Nevius Hoagland and his sisters Natalie MacKay and Madeline Gruber. Surviving are his wife Joan Merry Hoagland and his three daughters, Georgann Stocklinski, (Kenneth) Jill North, (John)and Elizabeth Ruwet, (George). Mr. Hoagland is survived by eleven grandchildren, Lloyd, Tami, Jill, Kenneth, Tim, John, Robin, Allie, Elise, Suzi, and Tim. He is also survived by twenty great grandchildren, Sara, Lauren Corie, Bianca, Ashley, Christa, Allie, Brett, Kenneth, Kylee, Addison, Ayden, Reese, Ella, Jack, Chelsea, Taryn, Hayley, Ryley and Callan.
A memorial service will be held 12 noon on January 13, 2013 at the United Reformed Church, 100 West Main Street in Somerville. Private interment at New Cemetery.
