Norma Gardner Pumphrey

Norma Gardner Pumphrey died Tuesday, March 18, 2014 at Harrogate Health Care Center, Lakewood. She was 92. She formerly resided in Upper Montclair and Normandy Beach before settling in Lakewood in 1998. She graduated in 1943 from Dickinson College, Carlisle PA., with a BA in Linguistics. She was a member of Who's Who in American Colleges and Chi Omega sorority. She was a high school Language teacher and boys' basketball coach before joining The US Navy
Waves in 1944. While living in Upper Montclair, she belonged to The Junior League and Montclair Golf Club. Always athletic she skated, played tennis and golf. She was an avid reader, bridge player and in later life bingo player and artist. She was predeceased by her husband, Jack H. Pumphrey, her parents, Margaret and Arthur Gardner and her daughter-in-law, Gayle M. Pumphrey. Surviving are her children, Janet G. Pumphrey of Bethesda, MD, Jack H. Pumphrey Jr of Little Falls and Margaret P. Wyckoff (John) of Bloomfield, her grandchildren, Jaime P. Frost (Bill), Jacqui G. Pumphrey (fiancé, Brandon Wallace), Ashley Wyckoff and John J. Wyckoff III, her sister, Jane G. Dillon of Juno Beach, FL. and many loving nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family requests a contribution in Norma Pumphrey's memory to Harrogate Health Care Center, 400 Locust St., Lakewood, NJ 08701. A Celebration of Norma's Life will be held on Saturday, April 26, 2014 at 1:30 in the Harrogate Auditorium.
